Mastering Spaced Repetition: The Science of Never Forgetting

In 1885, German psychologist Hermann Ebbinghaus published his groundbreaking research on memory, introducing the concept of the Forgetting Curve. Ebbinghaus demonstrated that humans forget newly learned information at an exponential rate. Within 24 hours, you lose up to 70% of what you just read.

The Mechanics of Spaced Repetition

The SM-2 Algorithm

Again: You forgot it completely. The interval drops to 1 minute.
Hard: You remembered it, but with great difficulty. The interval increases slightly.
Good: You remembered it with normal effort. The interval expands optimally (usually multiplying by 2.5x).
Easy: The answer was instantly obvious. The interval expands significantly.
